Is Your Brand the Answer? Why AEO Belongs in Your Marketing Strategy
When was the last time you asked ChatGPT, Siri or Google a question and actually clicked through to a website? Be honest…
If you're like most people, you got your answer and moved on. So here's the big question for your business: when your customers ask, is your brand the answer?
For years, we've all been chasing page one of Google, but search has changed, and it's changing fast! Today the goal isn't just to rank, it's to be the answer. Enter AEO and here's why you can't afford to ignore it.
So, What Exactly Is AEO?
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of structuring and formatting your content so that AI-powered answer engines, voice assistants and featured snippets can easily extract, trust and present your brand as the direct, concise response to a user's question.
In other words, SEO helps people find you. AEO helps AI quote you.
Still not sure it matters? The numbers may surprise you:
70% of consumers surveyed by Bain said AI overviews mean their searches are now mostly "zero-click". They get what they need right on the results page
46% of those same consumers are already using search engine AI overviews
Roughly 65% of Google searches now end without a click, and when an AI Overview shows up, that jumps to 83%
That's a LOT of people getting their answers without ever visiting a website. If your brand isn't part of that answer, you're missing out.
Does This Mean SEO Is Dead?
Nope! AEO builds on SEO; it doesn't replace it. Answer engines still pull from well-built, well-ranked websites, so your SEO foundation matters more than ever. What changes is the finish line.
With traditional SEO, the goal is to rank on page one and earn the click. With AEO, the goal is to be the answer, so your brand gets named, quoted or cited even when nobody clicks. SEO focuses on keywords and topics. AEO focuses on the questions your customers ask and the clear, direct answers you give them. And instead of only showing up on a search results page, AEO helps your brand show up in ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, voice assistants and featured snippets.
A smart strategy uses both and truly benefits.
7 Ways to Make Your Content Answer-Ready
Ready to become the answer? Here's where I start with my clients:
Start with your customers' real questions. What do people ask your sales team? What's sitting in your inbox? Check Google's "People Also Ask" box too. Write down the exact words your customers use.
Answer first, explain second. Give a clear, 40–60 word answer right under each question, then add the details. AI loves a straight answer (honestly, so do people).
Turn your headings into questions. "How long does a tankless water heater last?" tells both readers and AI exactly what's coming next.
Make it easy to scan. Short paragraphs, bullet points, numbered steps, tables and FAQ sections are easy for AI to grab and cite. Big walls of text? Not so much.
Add schema markup. This behind-the-scenes code (FAQ, How-To, Product and Organization schema) labels your content so AI knows what it is and who it's from.
Show you're the expert. Real authors, original data, case studies, certifications and consistent brand info across your website, LinkedIn and online directories all build trust.
Write like you talk. Voice search is conversational, so natural phrasing like "What's the best way to…" helps you match how people really ask.
Calling All B2B and Technical Brands
You may be thinking, "My customers are engineers. They don't ask Siri for help." Think again! According to Bain, the number one reason people turn to an AI chatbot instead of a search engine is to make sense of complex topics. That's 53% of chatbot users. Sound like your buyers?
Here's the good news: technical brands already have exactly the kind of expert knowledge AI is hungry for. The problem is that it's usually buried in PDFs, datasheets and sales decks that AI can't easily read.
Turn that knowledge into clear question-and-answer content on your website. Application notes become FAQ pages. Spec sheets become comparison tables. The way your engineers explain things every day becomes your next blog post. Then, when a buyer asks AI a question in your niche, your brand is the one that answers.

The Bottom Line
Search is becoming a conversation. The brands that win won't just be found — they'll be quoted. AEO is how you earn that spot.
The good news? You don't have to start from scratch. Most businesses already have the expertise; it just needs to be restructured so machines can recognize it and hand it to your buyers.
